Winter Author Blog Challenge – Writing Prompt #1
Are you READY? Are you SET? Here we GO!
Having written quite a few posts about the importance of social media to authors — and being regularly asked to speak about it — it seemed appropriate that we give our participants a reason to delve deeper into this amazing tool that we all have at our disposal, but so few of us seem to fully understand or utilize.
We had some pushback from a few participants in the inaugural Author Blog Challenge that there was too much of a focus on marketing. The snarky answer to that would be, simply, “Then go find another blog challenge that better suits you.” However, the reality is that most authors never earn very much money on their books — not because their books aren’t good, but because it’s a crowded field (THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of titles being released a year) and most don’t know how to find and connect with their readers.
Social media is not a panacea — you still have to write a good book, do signings and live events, pitch your book to those who can help you get the word out, and essentially work your butt off. But if you’re not using the social media tool, it’s kind of like trying to take a sea voyage in a rowboat. Social media also is not a strategy — it’s a tool you apply to your book marketing campaign.
To that end, we’ve got 15 days of writing prompts that deal with the topic of social media. Some pertain to the Big 6 (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, and Google+), but others pertain to lesser known/discussed platforms. If you’re not on these platforms, we suggest that you go explore them a bit. Look to see how other authors are using them and think about how you might do something similar … or radically different.
Try to have some fun with your posts. It’s a Challenge, NOT a test, so there’s no need to answer every question, answer them in a particular order, or copy them into the text of your post. I am personally most interested in the posts that weave a story that adddresses the topic, rather than those that just seem to try to make sure they got it all in.
Of course, there’s no requirement that you follow our prompts. You will be qualified for the day’s drawing just for posting and linking to our Linky site. But I promise you will see value if you study some of the topics with a new eye and an open mind.

Tell us about your blog. How long have you been blogging? Do you write on a regular schedule? Do you plan your topics
in advance or write as the spirit moves you? What was your favorite post? At which post do you look back and wonder what you were thinking when you wrote it? What has been the best feedback you’ve ever received? Have you ever written anything that was perceived as controversial, though you didn’t intend it that way? What tips would you offer other author bloggers?

In order to qualify for today’s drawing, you MUST post your link on our Linky. Click the image below to access it. In the field that says YOUR NAME, you write your name AND the name of your post (not the title of your blog). EXAMPLE: Marcie Brock – 7 Things Authors Can Learn from Watching the Oscars. The Author Blog Challenge works because you support each other by reading, promoting, sharing, and talking up the great posts you come across from your fellow participants.
