Blogging should be like sex

The bottom line is that blogging is like sex.
You can’t fake it. You can’t fake passion.
You can’t fake wanting to engage with the public.
If you do, it will ultimately be an unsatisfying experience
for both the blogger and their readers.

Kevin Anderson is absolutely right – blogging should be like sex: PASSIONATE. I think this is, perhaps, the biggest key to successful blogging. In a post on the Marcie Brock blog, we explored whether an author should even start a blog. Questions to consider around this decision include:

  1. Why are you writing?
  2. Do you have the time to devote to a blog?
  3. How patient are you?
  4. How much will you enjoy it?

The fact is that the first three are irrelevant if the answer to #4 is anything other than “HUGELY!”

I love Anderson’s comparison to sex, because that’s an activity with which we’ve been conditioned to associate passion. But what if we came to equally associate passion with blogging? Like sex, it’s not going to be a rock-your-world, blow-your-socks-off experience every time. But also like sex, your readers will be able to tell if you’re in it because you want to be, or you’re just going through the motions.

As Marcie said in her post:

Inevitably, enjoyment on the part of the blogger leads them to spend more time at it. The more time they spend, the more and better posts they write. More and better posts mean increased traffic. Increased traffic leads to validation for the blogger … which likely translates to greater enjoyment. Who says circular logic doesn’t work?

The best description I ever heard for a good blog was that it’s like having coffee with a friend. Yes, this “friend” is remote, more than likely someone you will never meet in “real life” – but they are a real person, with real interest in what you have to say. Blog readers and followers are a privilege, not a right. If someone takes the time to read your blog – or better yet, subscribe to it – you owe it to them to give them your best work.

If that means you only post once or twice a week, post once or twice a week. Don’t commit to a daily or M-F post if it means sacrificing quality just to try to get your numbers up. Visitors will be just drive-by readers unless you give them a reason to keep coming back. You can’t do that if you’re just phoning in your posts.
